Translating Complex to Simple Using UX

2015 | UBC Manager, Creative Services

Recognizing that traditional methods of communicating complex information in clinical trials were often ineffective, I conducted user research to understand patient needs and preferences. My findings revealed that many patients struggle with dense text, leading to low comprehension and engagement. To address this challenge, I proposed and developed a user-centered solution: short, animated explainer videos. After creating a proof-of-concept video, I secured approval to pilot this innovative approach. The results from the pilot program demonstrated that this new format significantly improved patient understanding and led to faster recruitment rates. The success of this initiative demonstrated the importance of prioritizing user experience in clinical trial recruitment, which led to the creation of a dedicated animation department within UBC's Creative Services that I went on to lead. Many of the videos we created were award winning, and pushed the envelope of what was possible in the Clinical Trial space at the time.
